  • Kim Kardashian said Marilyn Monroe’s dress didn’t fit across her hips when she first tried it on.

  • Kardashian said that at the time, Ripley denied her the opportunity to wear the dress.

  • She eventually lost 16 pounds in three weeks and successfully fitted into the dress.

Kim Kardashian said Ripley took away the Marilyn Monroe dress she ended up wearing to the Met Gala when it didn’t fit across her hips when she first tried it on.

In season two, episode seven of The Kardashians, Kardashian was in the process of securing the dress Marilyn Monroe wore when she sang “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy in 1962.

While Kardashian eventually wore the dress to the Met Gala in May, she said on the show that its owners, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, denied her the opportunity to wear it at one point in the process.

“They just took the whole thing away from me, so I can’t even do it, and I’m angry,” Kardashian said to her sisters Kourtney Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian over lunch on the episode. “I had to try the prototype first and see if it fit, and when it did, they sent the original. And when I tried to put it on, it didn’t even go over my hips. And I was just devastated.”

Controversy erupted after Kardashian wore the dress to the Met Gala, with some claiming she damaged the historic garment by wearing it. However, video emerged proving the dress had been damaged before Kardashian wore it.

Both she and Ripley’s also denied that she had damaged the garment.

In a clip from the dress fitting, Kardashian said she would “try anything” and try to lose 10 pounds to fit in the dress.

She told her sisters over lunch that she wrote Ripley’s a “crying, begging email” but that they were “very firm” in their denial, citing concerns about the dress’s insurance.

As Kardashian told Vogue, she ended up losing 16 pounds in three weeks. When she wore the dress to the Met Gala, she only did so for minutes and transformed into a replica after climbing the stairs at the event, Vogue reported.
