Killed by a train at a risky level crossing

A level crossing that is considered endangered has inflicted a sad fate on an old woman.

The 85-year-old was crossing a railway line with her dog pushing her roller bag when she was hit by a train she hadn’t seen in Surrey, England.

His view would have been obstructed by another train going in the opposite direction.

A report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch said Network Rail “knew that the level crossing near Ashtead posed an unacceptable risk”.

Network Rail said it intends to install signal lights and has already issued warnings around the junction.

The victim, whose name is not given in the investigation report, was entering the level crossing after a first train had passed when he was hit by a second train going in the opposite direction, traveling at almost 100 km/h.

The train driver honked. The poor woman tried to “go on, but couldn’t avoid the train in time,” the report says.
