‘Upset’ Kate Hudson, 43, reveals Oscar-nominated role she lost to Nicole Kidman, 55, despite making it through the audition: ‘They got a lot older’

Kate Hudson burst onto the acting scene in 2000 with her role in the cult comedy-drama Almost Famous.

And while the rest of her career consisted mostly of mainstream rom-coms, the actress was trying to snag another award-winning role after ‘Almost Famous’ wowed critics.

Speaking to The World’s First Podcast with Erin and Sara Foster, the 43-year-old said she lost the lead role in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge to Nicole Kidman.

“One of my favorite auditions I’ve ever done was with Baz Luhrmann,” Kate said.

“We had a pianist and he had a camera — it was like playing sham,” she continued.

She then said that she didn’t get the part because Luhrmann had aged “a lot” by casting Kidman, who is 12 years older than Hudson.

“I really wanted this role and it was written for a 19-year-old girl at the time, I think,” she said.

“Then what happened was I was kind of in an audition and then Nicole was in a relationship with Baz and wanted to do it,” she continued.

“And so of course it was, ‘I think Nicole Kidman does it. I just felt very connected to the path [Baz] does things so I was devastated.’

Kate added: “Of course I totally got it because it’s Nicole. It couldn’t be more different…I really wanted that part.”

Nicole starred in Moulin Rouge in 2001, which became one of the biggest hits of her career.

The role earned the Australian actress her first Oscar nomination at the 2002 Academy Awards.

Despite losing to Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball, Kidman won for The Hours the following year.

Meanwhile, Hudson has starred in a string of popcorn hits like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Bride Wars, You, Me and Dupree, and the horror film The Skeleton Key.
