Julie Bowen Opens Up About Her Plastic Surgery: “You Like a Sneaker”

Sunny Hostin’s unabashed honesty about undergoing plastic surgery allowed Julie Bowen to open up about her own.

The ‘Modern Family’ star appeared on ‘The View’ on Wednesday and reflected on the perks of becoming famous later in life. She recalled on the talk show that she was 39 and pregnant with twins when she filmed the pilot of her hit ABC comedy, and was so overwhelmed by motherhood that her sudden fame didn’t affect her as much as it did when she would have been younger.

“All I cared about was these little kids,” she said, referring to her twins, who are now teenagers. “I didn’t even realize everything else that was going on … I had a life and boobs to put in my shoes.”

As the panel snickered, Joy Behar assured the actor that she and her co-hosts could all identify.

“We all have, except Sunny,” Behar said, prompting Hostin to nod.

“Yes, I recently had a breast reduction and lift,” Hostin said.

“You just talked about it like that?” Bowen said in surprise.

“Yes, I freed myself,” Hostin said, shrugging.

“Oh god, I love you,” Bowen said. “I love that.”

Inspired by Hostin’s lack of shame, Bowen quickly began her own story about cosmetic surgery.

“I finally got the stomach fixed,” Bowen said, clutching her stomach. “Finally, after all these years. They ripped it open, the twins just ripped it open. And I said, ‘Once Modern Family is done… I’m going to have it fixed.’ But it was 11 years! So 11 years later we were diapering on Friday and Monday, they went in and they make you a sneaker.”

“Yes, they sew you up [like a sneaker]said co-host Sara Haines as she made a gesture like tying something across her stomach.

“You look pissed! You look good,” Hostin said, giving Bowen her approval.

“Thanks I think?” said Bowen in response.

Last week, Hostin spoke to People about having a breast reduction and liposuction surgery last summer. She told the magazine she’s speaking up about it because she wants to destigmatize it.

“I thought I’d be ashamed and say, ‘Oh my god, I do plastic surgery like all these crazy celebrities.’ But I’m not ashamed at all,” she said. “And I hope that sharing my story will help more people. If you’re feeling as body conscious as I am – you can do what you need to do to feel better.”
