Joe Biden sends ‘prayers and love’ to Jimmy Carter as former president is placed in hospice care

President Joe Biden has sent Jimmy Carter to ‘love’ and prayers hospice care a day after the former president, 98, entered office.

Biden wrote on Twitter: “To our friends Jimmy and Rosalynn and their family – Jill and I are with you in prayer and sending you our love.

“We admire you for the strength and humility you have shown in difficult times. May you continue your journey with grace and dignity and may God grant you peace.’

After several hospitalizations, Carter, who led the United States from 1977 to 1981, has decided to spend his “remaining time” at home, his charitable foundation announced Saturday.

Carter, the oldest living former president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, resides in Plains, Georgia with his wife Rosalynn.

Democratic President Joe Biden said he and his wife Jill are with Carter and his relatives “in prayer and sending you our love.”

In April 2021, Biden and his wife met with the Carters at their home in Plains.

The White House subsequently released a photo showing the couples smiling together, although only Rosalynn was seen by the press outside saying goodbye to the Bidens while using a walker.

Biden’s tweet follows a spate of tributes and words of comfort to the former leader and his relatives.

Carter, the longest-living American President, has recently had a series of brief hospitalizations. The Carter Center said in a statement Saturday that he has now chosen to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care in lieu of additional medical procedures.

His foundation, The Carter Center, established in 1982 to pursue his vision of world diplomacy, tweeted: “We greatly appreciate all the kind words we have received from President Carter’s admirers.”

Carter was a little-known governor of Georgia when he ran for the presidency before the 1976 election. He went on to defeat Ford and thrived as a Washington outsider after the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal that ousted Richard Nixon in 1974.

During his presidency, Carter was committed to human rights and social justice and enjoyed a strong first two years.

The last two years were tumultuous and he was finally defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan in a landslide loss in 1980, which eventually paved the way for his decades-long global advocacy for democracy, public health and human rights through the Carter Center.

In recent years, Carter has received various hospital treatments, including when he announced in August 2015 that he had a brain tumor and was undergoing radiation treatment – an illness from which he seemingly recovered against all odds.

The former President and his wife Rosalynn, 95, opened the center in 1982. His work there won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.

Carter said basic Christian principles such as justice and love were the bedrock of his presidency, and he taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist, his church in Plains, well into his 90s.
