Joe Biden releases memo protecting abortion pills as Kamala heads to Florida for speech

Joe Biden attacked on Sunday the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Republicans and the conservative Supreme Court 6-3 and issued a presidential memorandum protecting access to the abortion pill.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris will speak in Tallahassee, Fla. Sunday afternoon to announce the new guidelines and discuss the “next steps in the fight for reproductive rights.”

The Supreme Court reversed the landmark Roe v. Wade of 1973 and entered judgment in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which removed federal protection for abortion and returned rights to the states.

“Instead of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Committing Wade, we recognize today that the Supreme Court deprived the American people of a constitutional right over the past year,” Biden wrote in a statement Sunday.

Harris will announce in her remarks that the government’s new plan “ensures safe access to medical abortion,” referring specifically to the drug mifepristone, a pill used to induce a medical abortion or force a miscarriage. When combined with misoprostol, the drug is 97 percent effective during the first 63 days of pregnancy and may also be effective in the second trimester.

“Democrats proudly hail a barbaric policy to allow unrestricted abortions – including infanticide. That’s all everyone needs to know,” the Floruda Republican Party wrote in a statement accompanying Harris’ upcoming comments.

The 50th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade has provoked a wave of reactions from both sides of the abortion argument.

Demonstrators at the March for Life in Washington, DC on Saturday marked the first time the gathering has been held in the post-Roe countryside. Thousands of pro-life protesters celebrated the Supreme Court decision.

Meanwhile, abortion groups and activists have denounced the decision, calling it a massive step backwards in the fight for women’s rights.

“Even though their agenda is unpopular and dangerous, Republicans are running against themselves to take American liberties — and they’re not stopping,” the Democratic National Party wrote in a 50th-anniversary statement.

Government announcements on Sunday announced they would protect access to the abortion pill mifepristone

Government announcements on Sunday announced they would protect access to the abortion pill mifepristone “regardless of where they live”.

The president, in his statement Sunday morning, again called on Congress to legislate on abortion protections — an achievement now even less likely with the GOP majority in the House.

“Since the Supreme Court’s decision, Americans have consistently made themselves heard: Women should be able to make these deeply personal decisions free from political interference,” Biden said.

“Despite this, Republicans in Congress and across the country continue to push for a national ban on abortion, criminalize doctors and nurses, and make access to contraception difficult. It’s dangerous, extreme and non-contact,” he added. “I will continue to fight to protect a woman’s right to choose.”

“Congress must protect Roe v. Restoring Wade to federal law is the only way we can fully secure a woman’s right to vote in every state.”

One tactic Democrats want to use now that states can seemingly limit abortion rights without scrutiny is to ensure all women have access to the abortion pill.

“Since the day of the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, President Biden has emphasized the need to protect access to mifepristone, a drug used in medical abortions and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for was approved for over 20 years and accounts for the majority of all abortions in the United States,” a White House fact sheet said.

The President’s memorandum announced that the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), along with the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), will consider new guidance to support patients and providers and pharmacies that legally prescribe or Want to give access to mifepristone.

This protection would apply to all women “regardless of where they live”.

The second part of the memo aims to ensure that those seeking the abortion pill can access it “free of threats or violence.”

“The President has long made it clear that people should have access to reproductive care free from harassment, threats or violence,” the White House fact sheet said. “Pharmacies should not be treated any differently.”
