The suburbs are certainly ominous in the first trailer for Candy on Hulu. Based on the true story of a 1980 murder, the five-episode series (how British!) stars Jessica Biel (BoJack Horseman) as Candy Montgomery, a seemingly perfect Texas housewife whose dark side is revealed in the shocking death of Betty Gore , played by Melanie Lynskey (Don’t Look Up).

Montgomery had an affair with Gore’s husband Allan; after being told about it, she hit her friend in the church with an ax 41 times. Her confession was obtained through hypnosis by a psychiatrist, who revealed that she was unaware of the abuse after the “dissociative reaction”.

Candy wants to follow Montgomery from the beginning of her friendship with Gore through a dramatic trial in which she was acquitted of murder after pleading self-defense. The premonition of fruit punch, meat tenderizer and, of course, an ax promises a chilling story.

Beal, who also executive produced the miniseries, previously starred in The Sinner and the Facebook Watch series Limetown, which appears to be real. Linsky is back in another historical Hulu miniseries after being part of the Mrs. America ensemble; most recently, she has received recognition for her role in Yellow Jackets. Candy also features Timothy Simons (VP), Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is the New Black) and Raul Esparza (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit).

Candy was co-created with Nick Antosca, who previously presented The Act for Hulu. The streamer will further expand its catalog of true crime miniseries when Plainville Girl debuts later this month.

Candy will premiere on May 9, with new episodes airing daily through May 13.

Another Montgomery miniseries starring Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision) and Lily Rabe (Legion) will hit HBO Max and Big Little Lies’ David E. Kelly later this year.
