Jennifer Lawrence Says Adele Warned Her About Making Backfire Movie ‘Passengers’

Rumor has it that Adele isn’t just a great singer — she’s also a great careers advisor. At least according to Jennifer Lawrence.

In an interview with The New York Times published Wednesday, the Oscar-winner reflected on her career and some wise advice the superstar singer once gave her that she wished she had heeded in hindsight.

Referring to her 2016 film Passengers, which starred Chris Pratt and is one of the less critically acclaimed films of her successful career, Lawrence said, “Adele told me not to do it! She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her.”

“Passengers” chronicles the journey of two interstellar travelers who wake up from hypersleep aboard a ship a full 90 years ahead of schedule and are forced to live their lives alone, unlike everyone else, who will wake up when they reach their intended destination reach.

Aside from only getting a 30% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of their five lowest-rated films on the site, “Passengers” brought up some pretty challenging issues with approval, as Pratt’s character actually intentionally opens his female companion’s sleeping pod out of loneliness and frustration at his predicament.

In this week’s interview, Lawrence mentions “Passengers” as one of the films in her post-Hunger Games career that didn’t prove to be the best decision, eventually leading her to step back from the spotlight over concerns that she was being over-exposed their fanbase.

“I was like, ‘Oh no, you’re here because I’m here and I’m here because you’re here. Wait, who decided this was a good movie?’” the actress told the Times.

Last starring in the big-budget franchise X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019, Lawrence starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in last year’s Oscar-nominated dark ensemble comedy Don’t Look Up and Meryl Streep.

She will next appear in Causeway, which airs this week on Apple TV+, playing a veteran from the war in Afghanistan who comes home from a traumatic brain injury and tries to get back into daily life to integrate.
