The Banshees Of Inisherin producer James Flynn dies aged 57: Friends pay tribute to ‘wonderful’ Irish filmmaker as he passes away amid awards season success

James Flynn, co-producer of The Banshees Of Inisherin, has died aged 57.

The film’s producer’s death has been confirmed by The Irish Times and comes after the dark comedy starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson earned nine Oscar nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards.

The cause of death is currently unknown.

The co-founder of Metropolitan Film Productions is survived by his wife Juanita Wilson and children Alex and Anna.

His colleague, producer Ed Guiney, who worked with James on Sweety Barrett in 1998, paid him a touching tribute.

He told the outlet, “James was a wonderful human being, a brilliant producer – he had an encyclopedic knowledge of film and was the brightest of all the producers of my generation.

“He made tremendous contributions to the industry on the Film Board, as a member of Screen Producers Ireland and as a producer.”

James’ recent work includes Sir Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, its sequel Disenchanted and Greta, starring Isabelle Hupper.

Away from the big screen, he also served as executive producer on the hit series Vikings and its spin-off Valhalla.

He was known for collaborating with other Irish stars, collaborating with Farrell and Gleeson on various productions.

In 1997 he and his wife Juanita formed Metropolitan Film Productions and have worked on a variety of film and television productions.

In 2002 he formed Octagon Films, with credits including Neil Jordan’s Ondine and the Irish comedy Rory O’Shea Was Here, starring James McAvoy and Steven Robertson.

James received Oscar nominations for his 2008 short film The Door and the 2009 animated film The Secret of Kells.

The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on January 24 by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with multiple nods for Martin McDonagh’s direction of The Banshees Of Inisherin.
