Italy: New investigations into the Unabomber case

In the case of the Unabomber, which has been booby-trapping northeast Italy for years, the public prosecutor in Trieste submitted permission for further investigations to an investigating judge. The Public Ministry wants to re-examine ten objects that judicial authorities have collected in various cities in recent years, investigators reported today, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

The Public Ministry of Trieste plans to analyze the objects with state-of-the-art technological tools that could give new impetus to the investigation. The Unabomber reportedly struck for the first time in August 1994, when a homemade bomb injured three people at a folk festival in Sacile, near Pordenone. Later, among other things, a retired carabiniere was seriously injured by an explosive device on the beach at Lignano. In 2004, a marker exploded in the hand of a nine-year-old girl, seriously injuring the child.

The Unabomber reportedly last struck in May 2006. An explosive device hidden in a water bottle exploded in Caorle, injuring a 28-year-old. The bottle had fallen among the rocks near the sea. Engineer Elvo Z., who had worked at a weapons company and was passionate about mechanics and chemistry, was a suspect in the case, but was exonerated after a few years.

Francesca G, 28, is also calling for the investigation to be reopened, as she was the girl in whose hand the marker exploded in 2004. The child had found the pen on the bank of the Piave River. Francesca G. lost an eye and three fingers in the explosion.
