In a newly published excerpt from his diaries, collected in one book, Alan Rickman (19462016), from Harry PotterHe shared how he felt at the launch of the franchise film. According to The Guardian, Rickman described the experience as that of being a rock star.

“Coming to Radio City was like being a Beatle. Thousands of fans screamed as we got out of their cars. Mostly for Daniel Radcliffe, but a race for all. Not to mention the walk to the stage for 6,000 people.” said the actor, who already had an established career on the London stage before taking on the challenge of playing Severus Snape in the franchise.

The star’s book also includes other excerpts in which he recounts his decision to continue in the franchise after being diagnosed with cancer and shares his opinions on his character’s journey in the other films. In 2006, Alan wrote of an operation that was performed due to the diagnosis: “Preop. It’s like a movie set. Nothing feels real I don’t remember anything but with that painkiller upstairs in the recovery room. Caring, caring people.”

During 2005, Rickman was being treated for an aggressive form of prostate cancer. It was decided that the best option was removal of the entire prostate, surgery performed at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
