Investigating the wave of suicides among young Aboriginal people

The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse has launched an inquiry into the recent wave of suicides by young Aboriginal people in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

Remember that five young people aged 14 to 26 from the Anicinape communities of Kitciskaik and Lac-Simon, near Val-d’Or, committed suicide in August.

The Commission will investigate because some of these young people were known to the Abitibi-Témiscamingue DPJ. The investigation aims to verify whether their rights have been respected.

“It is also intended to ensure that action is taken to ensure that the situation does not repeat itself,” the commission said in a statement.

Recommendations could be made at the end of the process. However, conclusions or recommendations affecting a child will not be published.
