Investigating a murder near a boat

The Sûreté du Québec made an arrest in connection with the murder of a 30-year-old man whose body was discovered last Thursday in what initially suggested a foolish fall from a boat that was being repaired.

“I didn’t know these guys. I can’t say,” said the owner of the property where Danny Durand Laporte, 31, was killed last Thursday.

That evening, around 9:45 p.m., authorities were informed that a man on the 5th rank at Saint-Bernard-de-Michaudville in Montérégie was seriously injured.

On site, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) agents discovered a man on the ground near an imposing boat mounted on blocks.

“At base we thought it was related to falling off the boat. He worked there on repairs to the watercraft. We thought of a health problem or something else, ”said Louis-Philippe Ruel, spokesman for the SQ, at the beginning of the day on Monday.

However, police quickly got their hands on worrying elements of the investigation.

Therefore, the criminal service was commissioned to clarify the causes and circumstances of this suspicious death.

“The nebulous circumstances prompted investigators to look elsewhere,” Agent Ruel continues.

A crime scene related to this case was therefore set up on Friday at the Hôtel Laliberté near Highway 20 in Saint-Liboire. Another was also set up in Drummondville.

On Monday, the owner of the property where Mr Durand Laporte died was tight on details.

However, the investigative work seems to have paid off, as the police arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with an alleged murder.

The man is expected to appear at the Saint-Hyacinthe courthouse on Tuesday.

The victim had a long criminal record, including molesting and obstructing peace officers. The man was sentenced to 45 months in prison in 2019 for assault and assault.

“The other day you told me you wanted to change because you are sick of this life and then I would encourage you to do it […] I’ve missed you before, but now you will be missed by many of us,” his friend Patrick Gazaille wrote in a Facebook post.
