Investigating a Massacre: Those Responsible for the Buča Crimes

For eight months, reporters from The New York Times have worked to identify the names of the victims and perpetrators of one of the worst atrocities of the war in Ukraine: the Buča massacre, which took place in a Kyiv suburb in March 2022. And to reconstruct the dynamics of the facts.

A group of investigative reporters spent months in Bucha after the withdrawal of Russian forces, interviewing residents, collecting surveillance camera footage and obtaining documents from the Ukrainian government.

The accumulated evidence shows that the killing of dozens of unarmed civilians was premeditated and part of a ruthless “clean-up” operation by Russian forces to ensure a safe route to Kyiv.
