Internet crash: mobile phone providers suffer cuts in their networks

The main mobile operators that offer their services in Spain faced problems this Friday morning. According to DownDetector, a site specializing in collecting internet-related incidents, complaints have skyrocketed since 9am regarding Movistar, Vodafone, Jazztel, Orange, Simyo and Yoigo, among others.

The incidents, the volume of which decreased from 12 a.m. onwards, include problems with making calls, sending messages and using the Internet. The first reports came from Orange users. A few minutes later, the same thing happened to those from Movistar and Vodafone. Later, problems were registered with many other operators: Jazztel, Simyo, Lowi, Yoigo, MásMóvil and PepePhone.

Service outages have impacted both wired and wireless internet and phone signal, although each operator has had its own problems. At Movistar, 44% of user incidents are related to fixed internet, while at Orange, 74% of complaints were related to the lack of a phone line. This last operator reported at half past twelve in the afternoon that its services were fully restored.

As Vodafone sources explain to EL PAÍS, this operator is dealing with an incident unrelated to its systems: the cuts would be the result of maintenance work carried out by two companies, leading to “a massive cut in of the stem fiber”. . In the case of the aforementioned operator, the impact of the cuts would be mainly in the provinces of Murcia, Almería and Granada and would be felt on mobile phones (both telephony and telephony and internet use). Vodafone and Orange have a network sharing agreement in this region, so the problems experienced by the French company’s users will have been similar.

Endesa, provider of Orange’s fiber optic network in the region, recorded two incidents in its cabling at dawn on Friday, the company confirmed to this newspaper. Some sources say rodents may have damaged the cables, although this has not been confirmed. Reintel, owned by Red Eléctrica and another of Orange’s fiber providers, also struggled.

The combination of both events, sources familiar with the incident say, must have overloaded Orange’s networks and rendered them inoperable, which in turn affected the rest of the operators. Before two in the afternoon everything was back to normal.
