Vienna (OTS/SK) – Women are the backbone of indigenous peoples and play a crucial role in preserving and passing on the traditional knowledge of their ancestors. As guardians of natural resources, they play an essential role in the community. Many indigenous women are speaking out loud for their rights across the world. “Despite the crucial role that indigenous women play in their communities as providers, providers, knowledge holders, leaders and human rights defenders, they are often subjected to discrimination on the basis of their gender and origin”, criticizes Petra Bayr, spokesperson. SPÖ’s voice for global development. on the occasion of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples on 9 August. ****

“Indigenous women suffer particularly from poverty, illiteracy, limited access to health services, and domestic and sexual violence,” warns Bayr, adding: “I defend the right of indigenous peoples to self-determination and self-management of their own resources and areas. These rights have been violated for centuries. We must ensure that discrimination ends and that women, in particular, have access to education and health services.”

As a symbolic act, Bayr demands that the Austrian federal government sign and ratify ILO Convention 169, in which the International Labor Organization politically strengthens the rights of indigenous peoples. (final) kisses
