India is building the world’s tallest single arch railway bridge

India is building the world’s tallest single-arch railway bridge over the Chenab River in the Jammu and Kashmir region.

When the viaduct, considered an engineering marvel, is completed, Kashmir will be connected to the rest of India by rail for the first time, All India Radio reported.

It’s a railway arch that’s 35 meters taller than the famous Eiffel Tower, said Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla project executive director Surender Mahi.

The Chenab Bridge, 1.32 kilometers long and 359 meters above the river bed of the same name, has to withstand wind speeds of up to 266 kilometers per hour. (Text and photo: PL)
