A complex character, Maria Bruaca from “Pantanal”, played brilliantly by Isabel Teixeira, gained a huge following on social media. Last week the scene aired where she finally tells her cheating husband Tenório (Murilo Benício) that everything she’s been choking on for years has been driving the Twitter people crazy. In the plot, the character must rediscover himself after a lifetime of enduring submission. Called bruaca (“ugly and old woman”) in one of the definitions of the Houaiss dictionary, she was always subjugated, ridiculed, and abused at home.

In the final scenes, Maria turned the key and put an end to her sexist husband’s excesses. She, who started a kind of game of seduction with the farmer Alcides (Juliano Cazarré), finally left home and marveled at the beauties of the Pantanal.
In this week’s chapters, Maria will also flirt with Levi (Leandro Lima). The farmer will give in to the seduction of the new boss’s wife, but she eventually passes out. The sequence will move the story and, if only momentarily, make it subservient. While Alcides Levi threatens to find out what he did to Maria, Tenório feels victorious when he notices his wife acting the same as before. The sudden turn in the mother’s behavior will intrigue Guta (Julia Dalavia).

Anyone who followed the first version of the soap opera, shown in 1990 by the extinct Manchete, knows that Maria’s plot will still have a few twists and turns. The story of the woman who gives up her own life to live in her husband’s shadow may seem like fiction. But sadly, that’s still the reality of many Marias in 2022. That’s why the character inspires empathy and support from the public. For those who don’t remember, Isabel, an awardwinning actress with a long career in theater, made her soap opera debut as the doctor Jane, who was eventually murdered by her friend Thelma (Adriana Esteves) in ‘Amor de Mãe’ (2019) . Now, at 48, she, the daughter of musician Renato Teixeira, has also won her deserved place on television.
