Immigration to Europe: 330,000 irregular arrivals, highest since 2016

The number of irregular entries into the European Union increased by 64 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year and has reached the highest level since 2016, Frontex, the European border protection agency, announced on Friday. 330,000 irregular arrivals were registered on European territory in 2022. This is reported by Frontex, the European Border Protection Agency. The number of irregular arrivals in the European Union increased by 64% in 2022 compared to the previous year, reaching the highest level since 2016. And the numbers are underestimated according to some sources. In France, for example, irregular arrivals would be around 150,000 per year for the country alone.

The number of Syrian nationals has almost doubled

At the European level, Syrians, Afghans and Tunisians make up the majority with 47% of irregular arrivals. The number of Syrian nationals affected has practically doubled. 145,600 border crossings were registered on the Balkan route, an increase of 136% compared to last year and more than half of illegal border crossings.

On the Central Mediterranean route, the second largest route, arrivals exceeded 100,000, an increase of more than 50%. Figures likely to change in the coming years due to the new migratory challenge that is looming, especially following the withdrawal of French troops from Mali and the weakening of the Sahel.
