Jonathan Da Rosa Queiroz and Kamila Rodriguez Vital de Queiroz had lived in Quebec for ten years and had two children.

Nothing about this family, who has been comfortably based in Quebec for the past ten years, has hinted at this tragedy, according to those close to the couple.

“When I saw Kamila, she smiled and everything. Everything indicates that this is a normal family, but inside the couple you don’t know what’s going on,” sighs Nada Mahjoub, who lives a few doors down from the scene of the tragedy.

Kamila Rodriguez Vital de Queiroz, 39, was found dead by police at her home on rue des Mélèzes in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac around 11:45 p.m.

The victim’s body was found at his home with significant stab wounds.

According to our information, his body showed multiple marks from knife wounds.

This would be the seventh murder of a woman in Quebec since the beginning of the year.

The victim’s father was also reportedly found tied up in the basement of the apartment building by authorities. Originally from Brazil, he arrived in Quebec a few days ago to visit his daughter.

Although injured, we would not fear for the seventy-year-old’s life.

Two children, aged 7 and 10, were at the scene when police arrived but were not injured. They were entrusted to the Youth Welfare Office (DPJ).

Suspect found

After possibly sowing terror at his home, Jonathan Da Rosa Queiroz, the victim’s wife, got into a vehicle before stopping two kilometers further on Rue Nordet.

Police from the Régie du lac des Deux-Montagnes discovered the unresponsive suspect in his vehicle on rue Nordet in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac.

According to our information, the 42-year-old man had called the emergency number before he sustained a serious neck injury.

Around midnight, Yanick Lépine and Geneviève Leblanc, who live in the area, saw several police officers with flashlights in hand entering the neighborhood courtyards in search of the suspect.

He was eventually spotted in his white minivan parked in front of a burned-out lamppost.

“The police broke down the door [of the car], put him on the ground and started massaging him” says Mr. Lépine.

Da Rosa Queiroz’s death was registered at a hospital center.

“No other suspects are being sought in this case. On the face of it, it’s a marital crime,” said Marythé Bolduc, spokeswoman for the Sûreté du Québec.

A family without history

The couple, who immigrated from Brazil a decade ago, appeared to be living peacefully.

Both had the same job as web developer and accountant for several years. They had bought their lovely house in 2019.

Ms. Vital, who graduated from a university of applied sciences in accounting in 2017, kept in touch with the employees.

“She never said her spouse might be violent. It really surprised me. […] He’s a nice, sweet person. We don’t think she could have experienced that,” says her former teacher, Jacynthe Thibodeau.

That summer, the victim notably posted photos of the family at Walt Disney World and at a family race on Montreal’s North Shore.

Nada Mahjoub has also rubbed shoulders with the Queiroz family, as their daughters occasionally played together.

“I’m really sad for the kids. There they are taken away by the DPJ, but what happens to them afterwards? she blurts out, her eyes red with emotion.

“We feel unhappy for the little ones. They just lost their family, just like that,” adds their neighbor Filippo Dipaolo, snapping his fingers.
