“Ideal” conditions for the Snow Pentathlon

After two years of uncertainty, the Pentathlon des Neiges will be back at full capacity this weekend on the Plains of Abraham. The entire organization is impatient with the idea of finding the crowds of the big years of the event.

“We are very happy to be able to present the pentathlon in front of as many spectators as possible. We hope that people will come in large numbers to attend the 19th edition and encourage participants,” said new Director General Cynthia Paquet.

Despite recorded spring temperatures and rain this week, the organization is confident that conditions for the cycling, cross-country, snowshoeing, skating and running routes will be ideal to kick-start the event.

“What is certain is that an additional challenge has been added this week, but our teams will do everything necessary to ensure optimal conditions for the participants,” explains the managing director.

Snow specialist, speaker and former Olympic cross-country skier Alex Harvey agrees. “Currently the snow is wet, but there is good ground. It’s snowing at the top and the machine recycles the underlying layer to create a track with very good conditions. »

record turnout

This year, the Pentathlon des Neiges will see a record 2,120 high school and junior high school students parading the slopes during the RSEQ-QCA School Invitation Tournament.

“Obviously it’s very encouraging to see that, especially at a time when we’re hearing that young people are becoming more sedentary. We need to do more to encourage physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, and the Pentathlon is helping a lot in that mission,” the spokesman said.

For all tastes

Among the twenty or so activities that will take place over the next few weeks, there is a new one, the Night Race on Snow. With a headlamp and lighted accessories, participants can run on the Plains of Abraham in the evening, Thursday, February 23rd. It will be possible to run over a distance of 1, 5 or even 10 km.

The first weekend, February 18th and 19th, will see the traditional Winter Pentathlon competitions and the Family and Friends Challenge.

The BCF Business Lawyers Corporate Challenge, which aims to raise funds for the organization Objectif Forme, starts on the second weekend, February 25th. Several public figures will alternate between cycling, snowshoeing, skating, cross-country skiing and running over a relay distance of 27.4 km.

The Classic and Ultra Iceman events that ran last year will return to complete the event. 100 participants take part in running, skiing and solo skating triathlons over a distance of 25 or 75 km.
