Hugh Bonneville joined co-star Jack Lowden at a preview of their upcoming BBC drama The Gold at the BFI Southbank in London on Tuesday.

The 59-year-old Downton Abbey actor cut a dapper figure in a brown three-piece suit, which he layered over a crisp white shirt.

The Gold, which also stars Mamma Mia’s Dominic Cooper, follows the decades-long chain of events that followed what has been dubbed the ‘crime of the century’ and will be broadcast in six episodes worldwide on BBC One and Paramount+.

Hugh donned a pair of suede trainers and completed the look with Ukrainian flag cufflinks – a sign of his support for the war-torn country.

Meanwhile, Jack looked smart in a beige satin suit, which he wore with a white shirt and striped tie.

The ensemble consisted of shorts and the actor slipped into a pair of tonal loafers.

The story is set in November 1983 when six gunmen broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport and accidentally stumbled upon £26million worth of gold bullion.

Much of the three tons of stolen gold was never recovered and four of the suspects remained unconvicted.

The disposal of the bullion was among the largest international money laundering operations of the time and left a string of murders in its wake.

In 1985, Detective Constable Fordham went to Kenneth Noye’s mansion to investigate his involvement in the money laundering following the robbery.

After entering the compound, DC Fordham disturbed Noye’s rottweiler, which caught the attention of Noye, who had stabbed him.

The mobster, who died earlier this month aged 71, was acquitted of murder after a jury accepted his allegations that he acted in self-defense.

He was sentenced to 14 years in prison in July 1986 for handling stolen gold bars and was released in 1994.

In 1996 – while Noye was being released from prison without a warrant – he stabbed 21-year-old Stephen Cameron to death on an M25 feeder road near Swanley, Kent.

After the attack, Noye fled to Spain, where he lived under an assumed name until his arrest in 1998. When he was convicted of murder in 2000, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 16 years.

He was serving nearly 20 years in prison for the murder, which took place in front of Mr Cameron’s 17-year-old fiance, Danielle Cable.

A younger Noye is played by Jack Lowden while DC Fordham is played by Hadley Fraser.

Inspired by research and interviews with some of those involved in the events, show executives describe The Gold as “a vibrant dramatization that takes a journey into a 1980s world of cheap money and loose morals.”

The cast also includes Charlotte Spencer from The Duke, Tom Cullen from Black Mirror, Guilt actor Emun Elliott and Sean Harris from Southcliffe and Mission: Impossible.
