How Iggy Azalea built an eight-figure empire on the back of Fancy

Iggy Azalea made chart history with her 2014 global hit Fancy, but the Australian rapper’s music career quickly declined after a series of social media scandals and failed albums.

But despite her rapid rise and fall, the 32-year-old has built a staggering eight-figure empire for herself and recently boasted that she “doesn’t have to work a day” in her life.

From music and touring royalties to endorsement deals, savvy real estate investments and a lucrative move to OnlyFans, the Aussie hip-hop star now has a staggering net worth.

Unlike many other commercial artists, Iggy was smart enough to retain ownership of all of their master recordings and release catalogue.

She finally sold the rights to Domain Capital for an eight-figure sum last November, reported Billboard magazine.

This included her signature hit Fancy, along with songs like Black Widow, Kream and her collaboration with Ariana Grande, Problem.

After receiving backlash from fans on social media for the sale, Iggy clapped back: “I sold part of my catalogue, to whoever I wanted, for an amount that means I don’t have to work another day of my life.

“I love you all, but talking to the master is a little beyond most of your business savvy.”

She added: “That means I sold part of the songs to a company that owns them now. In return, they paid me what they would have earned in my lifetime in one lump sum.”

Less than two months after the sale, the former hitmaker joined OnlyFans in a move that will net her millions more.

Iggy currently charges subscribers $25 per month, but users have to upsell more to access sexier stuff.

If you tip the star $250, you’ll become a “VIP” for 12 months, which includes a free exclusive photo and some other undisclosed perks.

According to Forbes, her OnlyFans post promoting her VIP subscription brought in nearly $16,000 in tips in one week.

Iggy has declined to disclose her earnings on the platform, but realistic estimates put the number in the seven figures in the first month.

Veteran OnlyFans creator Mishel Karen analyzed the stats on Iggy’s site and told Chron Australia the rapper easily paid off AU$500,000 on her subscriptions alone.

With VIP subscribers, tips, and expensive PPV messages, Mishel believes Iggy can take home millions of dollars in her first month.

Earlier this week, she made some cryptic references to her OnlyFans earnings on Twitter.

“The last seven days have been insane, shaking, vomiting, jaws on the floor, life changing. And I mean that in a completely positive way,” she tweeted.

‘Bet on yourself. I couldn’t be happier!’

Before she sold her music catalog and joined OnlyFans, Iggy was still making big money from royalties, touring and endorsements.

She previously said she gets paid between $150,000 and $200,000 per show.

With nearly 17 million followers on Instagram, the bombshell is also taking home a pretty penny to liven up brands like Fashion Nova and Lounge Underwear.

She also released her own perfume, which she sold directly to consumers through her website, and partnered with BH Cosmetics to launch her own limited-edition makeup line.

At the height of her fame in the years following Fancy’s release, Iggy made sure to capitalize on her popularity Down Under.

In 2015, she was paid around A$500,000 to host a Bonds underwear campaign.

The following year, she signed a mega-dollar deal to be a judge on The X Factor Australia with Adam Lambert and Guy Sebastian.

Around that time, she was reported to have received A$250,000 for a one-off corporate appearance in Sydney for Google’s Australian employees.

Last year Iggy successfully flipped her Los Angeles mansion, selling it for AU$8 million and pocketing AU$750,000.

Now the rapper is shifting her focus back to music and is recording a new album that will be released under her own independent label.

“A year ago I was ready to quit music because I was tired of the negative energy it attracts,” she announced last year.

“But what I’ve learned is that even when I’m minding my own business, you’re all negative AND curious. So if I can’t have peace, neither can you. I come back. Cry about it.’

Iggy made music history in 2014 with Fancy, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and sold more than nine million copies.

In 2017, Billboard crowned it the biggest hit by a female rapper in history, beating out Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott.

Although she was never able to replicate Fancy’s success, Iggy has since racked up a string of Gold and Platinum certified hits including Black Widow, Kream, Team, Sally Walker and Beg for It.

At the height of her fame, she became one of the most sought-after artists to work with, eventually collaborating with A-list names like Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Tyga and Demi Lovato.

She left Australia at the age of just 16 and moved to Miami to pursue her dream of becoming a famous rapper.

In the early ’90s, she dreamed of escaping Mullumbimby for the bright lights of Hollywood.

She got her big break after signing to TI’s label and released a string of minor hip-hop hits before making it big with 2014’s Fancy.
