Blimey, how is it that time again? The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards were held today, hosted by actor Richard E. Grant, at the Southbank Center’s Royal Festival Hall in London. TV personality Alison Hammond headlined behind-the-scenes coverage of the event, while Ariana DeBose opened the night with an… interesting one musical number constructed from the names of all nominated “ladies in the room”. Then, for the first time, the final four BAFTAs – Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture – were announced live on air.
So who was up for some British recognition tonight? At the start of the ceremony, All Quiet on the Western Front led the nominees by 14 nods. In the end, the German film won the most gold mask trophies with seven wins, which is the most awards received by a non-English language film in BAFTA history. Meanwhile, Austin Butler’s Elvis accent earned him a Best Actor award and The Banshees of Inisherin won Outstanding British Film.
