HBO Max’s Green Lantern series and spin-off film Black Canary are still in development…though the Strange Adventures series has been scrapped

While DC fans are still reeling from the news that HBO Max’s Batgirl movie starring Leslie Grace is being scrapped entirely — despite being fully finished — there are still some DC projects in the works at the streaming service.

Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti’s streaming service’s Green Lantern TV series, starring Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine, is still in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The same report also reveals that another DC project – Strange Adventures – has been scrapped, although TV Line adds that a Black Canary spin-off film starring Jurnee Smollett is also still in development.

Greg Berlanti is behind Green Lantern and Strange Adventures, both of which were announced for HBO Max back in October 2019.

However, Green Lantern was much further along in its development when Finn Wittrock signed on in April 2021 to play Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott.

The series follows several Green Lantern characters written by Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith.

Berlanti – who wrote the screenplay for the much-maligned 2011 Green Lantern film before creating The CW Network’s Arrowverse – served as producer, while Lee Toland Krieger directed the first two episodes.

Sources tell THR that everyone involved is “taking their time” and that it will be an “effects-heavy show” that everyone wants to get right.

The spin-off film Black Canary was first announced in 2021, with Jurnee Smollett reprising her role from the 2020 film Birds of Prey.

Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) is writing the script for HBO Max, although no director is signed at this time.

While the project is still in development, there’s no word on when it might hit production or when a release date might be announced.

News of Strange Adventures getting the ax came from one of the show’s writers, Kevin Smith, who revealed the news on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast.

Smith would co-direct and write an episode of the series with Eric Carrasco, with whom he previously worked on The CW’s Supergirl.

He subsequently revealed that the episode focused on DC characters Bizzarro and Jimmy Olsen, adding that they pursued Nicolas Cage for Bizzarro.

‘[Dropping Strange Adventures] it kind of made sense to me — no one necessarily knows these characters, and it sounded like an expensive show,” Smith revealed on the podcast.
