Hampton’s hit-and-run driver, 20, is sentenced to 90 days in prison after mowing down an NYU student

The Hamptons hit-and-run driver who mowed down an 18-year-old has been sentenced to three months in prison after the teenager’s devastated family asked a judge to grant him a jail term.

On August 10, 2021, 20-year-old Daniel Campbell fatally hit Devesh ‘Devu’ Samtani with his Honda Pilot on the Old Stone Highway in Amagansett with such force that he was thrown six feet in the air. At the time, Campbell had nine other people in his car.

He had been labeled a “driving threat” after amassing a string of traffic offenses, including speeding tickets, a head-on collision and even having his driver’s license revoked.

Campbell pleaded guilty for the first time on August 5 to a single felony leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in the victim’s death.

At the time, Judge Richard Ambro said he planned to sentence Campbell – whose mother owns a boutique in Montauk and whose father is an SVP at a luxury furniture store – to six months of community service instead of jail.

The decision, which caused outrage from Samtani’s parents, who traveled from Hong Kong to attend the court hearings, prompted him to reconsider.

On Thursday, Ambro sentenced Campbell to 90 days in prison, 450 hours of community service and five years probation.

Before being handcuffed out of Suffolk County Criminal Court in Riverhead, Campbell addressed his victim’s family for the first time since the tragedy.

“The night of the accident was a terrible tragedy. My lawyers told me not to speak for a year, but I wish I could have met with the family to tell them how sorry I am for ruining their lives. I’m sorry for all the pain and devastation,” he told Samtani’s parents.

‘I wish I could have gone to Stony Brook Hospital to see your son. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the agony you went through. I wish I didn’t panic. I would give anything to change that night and change the result.

I prayed every night when he was in the hospital. You showed me what a beautiful son he was. I know the loss will be with you forever. I know that you may never forgive me, but you know how remorseful and sorry I am. I’m sorry guys.’

The night Samtani was killed, he was walking down the Old Stone Highway with his cousin Kabir Kurani, 18, and their friends, trying to get service to take an Uber home.

But he was hit so hard by Campbell – who was driving a nine-passenger Honda Pilot – that he was thrown 6 feet in the air, his shoes flying off his feet.

Campbell then drove off, leaving the NYU business student to die on the freeway surrounded by his friends.

At Campbell’s sentencing Thursday, Judge Ambro claimed he was unaware of Campbell’s three previous car accidents until informed by prosecutors and Samtani’s family attorney.

“On September 9, I found out about three accidents and a speeding ticket. I could no longer honor the commitment of not serving jail time,” he said.

He added Campbell has declined a trial after pleading guilty in August and that the 90-day sentence is “fair and reasonable.”

As part of his sentence, Campbell’s license will be revoked and he will be fined $2,000.

At least 30 members of Samtani’s family, including his parents Kishore and Mala Samtani, were in court at the hearing.

Before sentencing, Kishore Samtani told that Campbell had previously asked the judge to postpone his sentencing so he could spend Thanksgiving with his family.

“On August 25, Campbell requested a stay of sentencing because he wanted to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with his family. Thanks for what? Thank god for what… for getting out? So he’s going to miss a Thanksgiving and a Christmas,” he said.

“I’ve heard you’re upset about this, and if you’re upset about it, what about our position?”

Kishore Samtani said after the sentencing that he “feels bad for the boy”.

“But I feel worse about the ending,” he told .

He added that he was furious that Campbell’s driving history was only uncovered after the family hired a private investigator, who said, “It doesn’t seem right.”

‘I am tired. We go back. We can not do anything. Right. For us it won’t make any difference – one year two years. Actually we are not satisfied with the system. We could afford lawyers. We could afford investigators. So we got his three months. What about the normal people?. You won’t be able to do anything,’ he said.

“There was a lot of frustration in our family … We set something up, an example for other kids — come on, please don’t let anyone die there.”

Campbell was involved in at least two accidents prior to the night he killed Samtani — including in February 2021, when he drove the wrong way down a one-way street in White Plains, New York.

It came five months before the horrific death of New York University freshman Samtani.

And just eight days before the fatal crash, Campbell was slapped with six points for a June 2021 speeding violation in the Bronx.

But his reckless driving history dates back to 2020 with multiple infractions including 8 points deducted from his driver’s license, which he earned in less than a year, according to documents.

Famed lawyer Benjamin Brafman, representing Samtani’s devastated family, told in September: “One of the accidents he was involved in was a head-on collision with another vehicle on a street that was clearly marked as a one-way street.

“He was going in the wrong direction. It was a miracle no one was killed or injured.’

Referring to Campbell himself, Brafman added, “We describe him as a driving threat.”

In addition to the previous collisions and speeding tickets, in May 2021 Campbell received two points on his driver’s license for violating traffic devices in the town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County.

He was also fined a total of $184 for driving an unchecked and unregistered vehicle in Westchester County in November 2020.

Campbell was spotted visiting his mother’s boutique in Montauk, Bontemps, in the months leading up to his sentencing. He and his family live part-time in the area, with their primary residence in Hastings-on-the-Hudson in Westchester County.

Opened in spring 2021, the family-run business is a beachwear store that sells hoodies, sandals, hats, beach bags and sunglasses, among other items, and has reported nearly $1 million in annual sales, according to public records.

Campbell’s father, Daniel Campbell, 51, is SVP of a contemporary luxury home furnishings company he has worked for for more than 17 years, according to his Linkedin profile.

His mother Gretchen Smith Campbell, 52, told that she had “no comment” when asked about the details surrounding the night of the crash.
