Ex-‘Game of Thrones’ star Gwendoline Christie was thrilled to play something opposite of Brienne.
Her character on Netflix’s “Wednesday” was cast as a subversion of a “Hitchcock heroine.”
Christie told Vogue in an interview that costume designer Colleen Atwood made her feel “celebrated.”
Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie played Larissa Weems in the Netflix hit series Wednesday, a character whose elegant style was a far cry from Brienne von Tarth’s armor. While Christie broke down 10 of her fashion looks for Vogue, Christie praised the hit show’s costume designer for making her feel amazing.
“I was blown away by the opportunity to work with Colleen Atwood,” Christie said.
From the start, Atwood and Christie agreed on Larissa’s visual aesthetic. Atwood felt the look should be inspired by The Birds star Tippi Hedren, and Christie had already dreamed up a ruthless “Hitchcock heroine” style.
“Colleen and I had these wonderful adjustments where she has a laser-like mind,” Christie said. “She always made me feel celebrated. She made me feel like my body is beautiful – that I’m beautiful, that I’m wearing good clothes, and that my ideas are welcome and relevant.”
Christie said she felt ready to play a character who was the complete opposite of Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, who was often looked down on for her looks and her desire to be a woman and a knight.

“This character had to overcome a lot of shame about how society treated him,” Christie said. “But this is a character who is brave and confident and proud.
While reflecting on her TV costumes and red carpet looks, as well as her runway appearances, the 6’3″ star said people welcomed her to the fashion world much quicker than they did to Hollywood.
“It took me a long time to feel accepted by the acting industry, but the fashion industry accepted me,” Christie said. “Everything society has said about me hasn’t worked for me. For everything about my volume, my opinions, my sense of humor, my desire for change and transformation while demanding space with the body I was born into.
