Police responded to a call at 9:59 p.m. local time and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, Sgt. Gray said.

The victims reportedly fled the store when police arrived at the scene.

Minutes later, the Evansville Police Department tweeted that the threat had been “neutralized” and was in custody.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Sgt Gray confirmed the suspect was killed by police after he shot authorities “multiple times”.

She added: “We’ve been trained to go in when there’s an active threat – we don’t pause, we don’t take time to figure out what’s going on.

“We go in and we go to where the shots are going to be fired.”

Officers cleared the area shortly after to attend to possible victims.

Sgt. Gray urged all witnesses to call the police department with any information that would assist the investigation.

The police did not give a motive for the shooting late Thursday evening.

Prosecutors announced Tuesday they would not seek the death penalty for mass shooter Patrick Crusius, who killed 23 people at an El Paso Walmart in 2019.

Crusius, 24, killed 23 people and injured 22 when he opened fire on a Walmart in his home state of Texas in August 2019.

Six died and six were injured in November 2022 when another gunman, Andre Bing, opened fire at a Chesapeake store before turning the gun on himself.

The Walmart supervisor, 31, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after attacking colleagues at the Virginia store.

The motive for the attack was unclear.

In another Walmart shooting four days later, one was injured at a North Carolina store of the supermarket chain.
