Couldn’t miss this Venice Film Festival the controversy about Giorgia Meloni. The leader of brothers of Italy as always, it is in the sights of the left and also that segment of red intellectuals who respond to a single command: to hate the political opponent serving in the opposing camp. And sure enough, the attack arrived at the screening. In the final part of the film March on Rome, director Mark Cousins shows an image of Giorgia Meloni alongside that of other politicians, including Vladimir Putin and Jair Bolsonaro, as part of a reflection on the danger of a return to fascism.
The Irish director’s work was presented as a Special Event Out competition to open Authors’ Days. The performance was greeted with over a minute of applause from the audience at the “Sala Perla”. The film opens in cinemas from October 20th and is inspired by a philological reading of “A noi”, created in 1923 as an official document of the Fascist Party in the days that led Benito Mussolini to the head of government. It ends with “Bella ciao” sung by Alba Rohrwacher who plays Anna, a woman from a humble background, initially a staunch supporter of the regime and then very critical. In short, the rhetoric accompanying this election campaign has stopped at the Lido and, as always, Giorgia Meloni is being targeted.
