The attack happened on Wednesday afternoon on a regional train from Hamburg to Kiel. Several people were also injured.

At least two people were killed and several injured in a knife attack on a regional train in northern Germany, the alleged perpetrator of which was arrested, the police said on Wednesday (January 25).

The attack happened on Wednesday afternoon in a regional train between Hamburg and Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein), said a Flensburg police spokesman.

The alleged perpetrator arrested

The alleged perpetrator was arrested at Brokstedt station, where the regional train was shut down. The motive for the attack has not yet been determined, according to police. A large number of police vehicles and ambulances are deployed around the station, according to photos published by the daily Bild. Deutsche Bahn has announced that trains on main routes are canceled.

German authorities have remained vigilant in the face of the jihadist threat in recent years, particularly since a ramming truck attack claimed by the Islamic State group killed 12 in December 2016 in Berlin. This jihadist attack is the deadliest ever perpetrated on German soil.

Another threat looms over Germany, embodied by the extreme right, after several deadly attacks in recent years targeting community or religious sites.
