Germany approves the transport of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, the state press says

The German government has approved the shipment of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and is ready to authorize the transfer of at least one company of the Leopard 2A6 model, according to reports in Der Spiegel magazine and NTV broadcaster Tuesday (24).

The tanks will come from the Bundeswehr, whose government will also approve requests from other countries that have them to be sent to Ukraine, like that of Poland announced this Tuesday.

The Leopard 2s are made in Germany, so shipping these tanks through other countries must be approved by the Berlin government.

The information published by Spiegel is confirmed this Wednesday (25th) in a statement by Chancellor Olaf Scholz published by the newspaper Bild.

A few months ago, Ukraine requested the use of Leopard 2 to stem the advance of Russian troops, but Germany did not approve.

Within the country’s coalition government, there appeared to be conflicting positions on the issue. The official argument for the refusal was that any operation would have to be coordinated with Western allies supporting Kyiv.

The Leopard 2 carries four occupants and can fire at targets up to 5 km away. The tank weighs about 60 tons and can reach a speed of almost 70 km/h, it can also cross flooded areas and rivers up to 4 m deep and has a periscope.
