Genesis tops Forbes list of 10 highest-paid entertainers of 2022 by catalog sales

Genesis landed in a top 10 list of highest-paid entertainers of 2022, bolstered by massive catalog sales last fall and revenue from touring and streaming.

The musical ensemble of Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford topped the Forbes list with sales of $230 million after selling its catalog to Concord Music Group in September for a total of $300 million .

The $230 million grand total also included streaming totals from Collins’ work as a solo artist, according to the outlet.

Sting landed second on the list with $210 million after The Police frontman sold his entire catalog to Universal Music Group for $300 million before fees, Forbes reported.

Tyler Perry came third on the list with $175 million as the multi-talented entertainer earned the grand total of multiple earnings from his films, BET shows and Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Perry, who made the 2021 list, is the only entertainer in the top 10 who is a billionaire, the outlet reported.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone took fourth place with $160 million, with most of the revenue coming from a $935 million six-year deal with Paramount. The creative tandem also made money from an HBO Max deal as well as from their musical The Book of Mormon.

Simpsons co-creators James L. Brooks and Matt Groening took fifth place with $105 million, which was attributed to their April 2019 streaming deal, which saw Forbes carry 30 seasons of the iconic animated series from FX to Disney+.

A-list star Brad Pitt landed sixth on the list with an estimated $100 million after selling a majority stake in his production company Plan B late last year. Pitt’s work in front of the camera, in films such as Babylon, Bullet Train and The Lost City, has earned him an estimated $30 million.

Musical icons, the Rolling Stones, came in seventh on the list with $98 million off $136 million in touring and royalties gross from their massive catalogue. The iconic group led by Mick Jagger grossed an average of $8.5 million on a 15-night European tour last year.

Filmmaker James Cameron took eighth place with $95 million from his earnings from the hit film Avatar: The Way of Water, which grossed more than $2.2 million worldwide. The outlet quoted sources as saying Cameron’s deal for the highly anticipated film is “back-end-heavy with bonuses” for milestones at the box office.

Taylor Swift was the only female entertainer on the list, ranking ninth with an income of $92 million derived from earnings from her album sales and streaming earnings. Swift has a good chance of making the 2024 list after experiencing unprecedented demand for tickets to her 52-date Midnights tour last fall.

Popular rapper Bad Bunny rounded out the top 10 with $88 million from two tours: The World’s Hottest Tour and El Último Tour Del Mundo. The Puerto Rico native contributed to his bottom line with lucrative endorsement deals with companies like Adidas, Corona and Cheetos.

Forbes has compiled the top 10 list with information including 2022 pre-tax earnings excluding representation fees and data from multiple sources including Nielsen BookScan, Luminate, Pollstar, IMDBPro and Variety Insight as well as interviews with industry experts.
