Williams was only 12 years old and made her professional acting debut when she was cast as Arya Stark.

The Arya character was established early on as much more of a tomboy than her stiff and straight sister, Sansa (Sophie Turner).

The actress revealed that she didn’t even consider Arya a straight woman until her sex scene with Gendry last season, where the characters got back together after many years, which she says was the first time Arya had “surprised” her .

“The first time I was surprised by Arya was probably on the last series where she strips naked and sleeps with Gendry,” she says, laughing.

“I thought Arya was gay, you know? So yes. That was a surprise,” the actress added with a shrug.

She wasn’t the only one caught off guard, fans and journalists alike questioned the scene, and Williams herself revealed in a 2019 interview with EW that she didn’t even think it was a real scene for the show.

“At first I thought it was a joke. I said, “Yo, good.” and [the showrunners were] like, “No, we didn’t do that this year.” Oh f—k!’ She said.

“I came through and read the scene and I was like, ‘Oh, we’re actually going to do this. When do I shoot this? I have to go to the gym.’ A whole list of things,’ she added.

Williams also said that Benioff and Weiss told her she could “show as much or as little as she wants,” so she decided to keep it “pretty private.” I don’t think it matters that Arya flashes.’

She currently plays Jordan in the FX miniseries Pistol about the iconic punk group Sex Pistols.

She will next be seen as Catherine Dior, sister of fashion icon Christian Dior, in new series The New Look, while Ben Mendelsohn plays her on-screen brother.
