Galaxy S23 Ultra vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max: Who Has the Longest Battery Life? – 01net

In recent years, the “Pro Max” models of iPhones have dominated the ranking of smartphones with the best endurance. But the competition has not yet said its last word, as evidenced by the various autonomy tests that compare Samsung’s phone to Apple’s.

Three races, two marathon runners

In 2022, we highlighted the disappointing autonomy of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and its Exynos chip. Samsung seems to have heard the critics by including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in its Galaxy S23 Ultra this year, which works wonders. Here we focus on three tests that compare the autonomy of the S23 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro Max: that of the PhoneBuff YouTube channel, that of DXOMARK and that of our 01Lab. But first, let’s take stock of the forces involved.

We start with the comparison of PhoneBuff, which subjected the two devices to a series of tests consisting of launching different applications to perform different tasks to see how the battery drains at each stage. As you can see, the two smartphones are on par throughout the test, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra ends up with the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 6% battery remaining.

A first test that indicates that the iPhone 14 Pro Max handles the last battery percent better than its opponent of the day. A finding that is confirmed by the second autonomy test, which, however, delivers very different results. This is DXOMARK’s. The French laboratory, best known for its tests related to photography, also measures the endurance of smartphones.

According to their test procedures, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra achieves an endurance score of 142, compared to “only” 133 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. In the ranking of smartphones with the best battery life, the Samsung cell phone takes 6th place, ahead of Apple now in 22nd place. According to DXO, the S23 continues to stand out for its excellent video autonomy. On the other hand, it notes the rapid drop in battery level from 5%, which confirms what we observed in the PhoneBuff video.

Let’s end this autonomy duel with the tests we carried out in our 01Lab. As we detailed in our review of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung and Qualcomm, we are doing a colossal job to finally offer the Korean brand’s latest “flagship” an autonomy worthy of the name.

But as tough as it is, the S23 Ultra lags behind the iPhone 14 Pro Max according to our 01Lab results. The standardized tests that we systematically apply to all smartphones allow us to highlight autonomy in the context of universal use and autonomy in video. In both cases, the Apple smartphone has a comfortable lead.

With two out of three tests topping the iPhone 14 Pro Max, it therefore remains the champion of endurance, even if the Galaxy S23 Ultra has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of performance.

On the other hand, the charging time remains to the advantage of the S23 Ultra, which goes from 0 to 100% battery in 1 h 05, versus 1 h 40 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which nevertheless has a smaller battery. Either way, no brand supplies a charger in the box.
