"Gal Gadot has the energy of Barbie" : Margot Robbie reveals why she wanted the actress in the film

According to Margot Robbie, if there’s one actress who perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Barbie, it’s Gal Gadot, and here’s why…

The countdown is on: more than two months until we can discover Margot Robbie in the skin of this lovely Barbie. But the actress isn’t the only one taking on the role, with a variety of actresses set to play different versions of the iconic doll, including Issa Rae’s Barbie President, Emma Mackey’s Nobel Prize-winning Barbie, Dua Lipa’s Barbie Mermaid, or… the Barbie Diplomat by Nicola Coughlan.

But when Margot Robbie and writer-director Greta Gerwig were looking for actresses to play Barbie, there was one who they felt was the perfect embodiment of the legendary doll in every way: one Gal Gadot. Margot Robbie spoke on the subject in an interview with Vogue (via ComingSoon).

Gal Gadot has the energy of Barbie. Because Gal Gadot is incredibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being so beautiful because she’s so genuine and so passionately loveable it’s almost ridiculous.

However, the “Wonder Woman” star was unavailable for the role. Margot Robbie then used Gal Gadot’s “Barbie energy” as a model when auditioning for the film.

What is Barbie the Movie about?

“After being kicked out of Barbieland for not being a perfect doll, Barbie heads out into the real world to find true happiness with Ken’s help,” reads the official synopsis. Margot Robbie will therefore play the titular Barbie, while Ryan Gosling will bring the main Ken to life.
