A Fox News photojournalist was killed in Ukraine on Monday when the car he was traveling with correspondent Benjamin Hall was struck by oncoming fire, the network confirmed on Tuesday.

Pierre Zakrzewski, 55, was covering the Russian invasion of Ukraine with Hall when their car was hit in Gorenka, near Kyiv, Ukraine, Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott said in an email to staff.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share this morning the news of our beloved cinematographer Pierre Zakszewski,” Scott wrote in a memo to the network staff.

“Pierre was killed in Gorenka, near Kiev, Ukraine. Yesterday Pierre was with Benjamin Hall at a news gathering when their car came under fire.

On Monday, the network announced that Hall was injured, but added that it did not have further details about his condition.

“Pierre was a warzone photographer who, during his long tenure with us, covered almost every international story for Fox News, from Iraq to Afghanistan to Syria,” Scott continued.

She added that Zakshevsky has been working in Ukraine since February and is based in London.

Zakrzewski was described as a network veteran whose “passion and journalistic talent were unmatched”.

His talents were vast and there wasn’t a role he wasn’t involved in to help out in the field – from photographer to engineer to editor to producer – and he did it all under tremendous pressure with tremendous skill.

He was deeply committed to telling this story, and his courage, professionalism and work ethic were renowned among journalists in all media. He was wildly popular – everyone in the media industry who covered foreign stories knew and respected Pierre.

Zakszewski was on assignment with Benjamin Hall, a British journalist working for Fox News, who was seriously injured during a shrapnel attack to his legs.

Hall, 39, a married father of three from London who has been with the American broadcaster since 2015, was in intensive care at the hospital today.

Fox News Media chief executive Suzanne Scott told staff in a memo that bosses have a “minimum level of detail” and teams on the ground are working to learn more about what happened.

Fellow journalists began tweeting tributes to Zakrzewski upon learning of his death.

“I don’t know what to say,” wrote Fox News correspondent Trey Inst. “Pierre was as good as they come. Selfless. Brave. Passionate. I’m so sorry this happened to you.
