Iceland police arrest four young men accused of planning a terrorist attack. It is said that they accumulated several weapons and a lot of ammunition. The reason is unclear, the stated goals are cryptic. The case is unusual as Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world.

Icelandic police have arrested four men believed to be involved in preparing a “terrorist attack”. Police told a news conference that they had seized several semi-automatic weapons, including some from the 3D printer, and thousands of rounds of ammunition in nine different locations.

Four Icelanders in their 20s were arrested Wednesday in Kopavogur, a suburb of the capital Reykjavik, and in the southwestern Iceland town of Mosfellsbaer, police said. Two of them are arrested.

While the motives for the planned attack are still unclear, the possible targets would be “various institutions” and “citizens of the state”, including parliament and the police.

First study of its kind in Iceland

It is now being checked whether the men have connections to extremist organizations or foreign officials, officials said. “As far as we know, this is the first time that an investigation of this kind has been opened (in Iceland),” said police representative Karl Steinar Valsson.

According to the Global Peace Index, the small country with around 375,000 inhabitants is considered the “most peaceful country in the world”. Iceland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, but violent crime has increased in recent years.
