Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot during a protest march on Thursday. He reportedly injured his leg, according to Pakistani news channel ARY News. Rescue workers told the German Press Agency that one person was killed by the gunfire and seven others were injured in the incident. A subsequent panic in the crowd led to more injuries.

The incident took place in the central province of Punjab. It is not immediately known who is behind the crime. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the act. Pakistani President Arif Alvi spoke of a “shocking attack” on Twitter.

Imran Khan was ousted as prime minister in April by a vote of no confidence. Since then, he has regularly taken his followers to the streets. Since last Friday he has been on a protest march across the country demanding new elections.
