Hamburg (ots) – Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen sharply criticized Germany’s reluctance to deliver heavy weapons to Ukraine in an interview with Stern. Chancellor Scholz missed a historic opportunity. But it’s not too late. “The meeting of NATO defense ministers in Ramstein is an opportunity for Scholz and his new defense minister, Pistorius, to show leadership.”

In the end, Germany always do the right thing, Fogh Rasmussen told the star. “But always at the insistence and pressure of all the other allies. That gives Germany this very defensive image.” He hopes that Germany will finally deliver heavy main battle tanks to Ukraine. “And not only that: Germany must also allow the other 13 European countries to deliver the Leopard 2 to Ukraine,” said Fogh Rasmussen, who headed NATO from 2009 to 2014 and was Danish prime minister.

There is no alternative to material aid for Ukraine. Otherwise, the war could drag on indefinitely “and become a smoldering or frozen conflict that would cripple all of Europe, including Germany, for many, many years to come”.
