Luke Knox, a Florida International soccer player and younger brother of Buffalo Bills star Dawson Knox, has died suddenly at the age of 22.

School officials and Bill’s head coach Sean McDermott have confirmed the death. An exact cause of death was not announced, but the police do not assume third-party negligence.

“Our hearts are with Dawson and his family at this time,” McDermott told reporters at Bills training camp at St. John Fisher in Pittsford, New York. “We are right there with him and supporting him and his family – and just tragic news I woke up to this morning.”

Luke was originally enrolled at Ole Miss as a linebacker and tight end but had since transferred to FIU where he hoped to compete for a linebacker spot. He got to play two seasons with Dawson at Ole Miss before the older brother was drafted by the Bills as a close pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

FIU head coach Mike MacIntyre, who also previously worked with Luke as Ole Miss’ defense coordinator, also released a statement.

“Luke’s family is special to me and they will always be in my heart and prayers during this difficult time,” MacIntyre said. “On behalf of the entire FIU football family, I offer my sincere condolences to Luke’s family and everyone who loves him.”

Luke and Dawson were close, and much of the former’s Instagram account was devoted to the latter.

So freaking proud of you bro,” Luke wrote on Instagram after Dawson was drafted in 2019. “Time to go and get what’s yours!! Loving You”

Dawson has yet to comment publicly on the tragedy, which happened early in his fourth NFL season.

Luke started as a linebacker for Ole Miss twice in 2019, but mostly played on special teams.
