YouTube channel Mutekimaru Channel, unearthed by Automaton-Media, specializes in creating live streaming series called “Fish Play Pokémon”. In these shows, Fish in a Bowl actually manage to play entire Pokémon games.

So far these fish have played through Pokémon Crystal, LeafGreen and Sapphire, among others – with 20,000 hours of play under their belt. Mutekimaru has developed a program that uses motion tracking with a camera. Under the glass, the creator has placed a tablet containing a sheet of paper and various keystrokes. When the fish swims past the button, the circuit board detects the movement and activates the corresponding input on the Nintendo Switch.

On January 15, while streaming Pokémon Purple live, the game crashed and the fish ended up in the Switch menu. By searching the latter, they managed to reach the eShop online store.

They explored the various menus in the store and eventually landed on the console owner’s portfolio page. From there, the fish managed to deposit 500 yen ($5.22) into the account while Mutekimaru’s credit card details were shared with viewers of the show! Oops…!
