Fire Emblem Engage: A Complex But Satisfying RPG

A rich and colorful universe, complex and satisfying combat, an immersive storyline… Engage Fire Emblem has everything that appeals to RPG fans. But they will still have to work hard to appreciate it at its fair value.

Today, Fire Emblem Engage transports us to an ultra-smooth and colorful world through our Nintendo Switch console. The pleasant yet well-defined aesthetic of this new game immediately suggests a welcoming and warm universe full of promise.

But does the game deliver on all those promises? Not exactly. At least not immediately.

Because let’s face it, it’s primarily aimed at experienced players who are already well acquainted with the codes of its universe. In other words, it’s probably not the best gateway for anyone wanting to learn about the saga, rich in its three decades of existence. Over the course of the various chapters – there are almost twenty of them – this world has been shaped and then refined in the hands of its fans.

Question mark

In short, we admit that it took a long time to fully understand the mechanics of this Fire Emblem Engage that hit stores yesterday. In fact, his particularly elaborate fights need time to be tamed, since the possible strategies are numerous on the battlefield, here transformed into a chessboard. And when you increase the number of characters that can participate (it goes up to eight), it’s easy to hesitate before starting a new maneuver.

Attack or wait? Hit the enemy or heal a teammate? And what weapons should we choose when it comes time to equip our heroes? Question marks take time to resolve in our minds.

But when the mystery is out and intuition finally takes over, we’re treated to intensely satisfying and rhythmic clashes and combat that’s probably among the most addictive we’ve seen in this type of game in a couple of years.

All of this takes place in a fantastical world straight out of a Japanese manga that we’d devour page by page.

Fluid action

Yes, the game remains chatty; but his dialogues are of an amazing fluidity and lead us without resistance into his intrigues and his kingdoms where you have to find 12 rings each containing a key character of the saga.

In short, Fire Emblem Engage takes time and effort to be fully appreciated. But when he does, the player will be handsomely rewarded by this game that will no doubt keep him captivated for dozens of hours.
