Finland’s prime minister reportedly agrees to drug test after party video

HELSINKI | Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, 36, assured Thursday that she would see no problem in taking a drug test after a video was broadcast on social networks in which we see her dancing at a party and sparking rumors of drug use let.

“I have nothing to hide. I haven’t taken any drugs so I have no problem taking a test,” Sanna Marin of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) told reporters.

The video, which was widely circulated on social networks and published by various media outlets, shows the Prime Minister dancing uninhibitedly with a group of people.

“These videos are private, they were shot in private places,” added the Prime Minister. “I spent an evening with friends,” she explained.

Ms Marin’s dancing drew criticism from some, who felt it was inappropriate for a prime minister, while others felt she had a right to chat with friends at a private party.

Very controversial rumors also circulated about statements by unidentified people about narcotics.

Center Party MP Mikko Karna, part of Marin’s coalition government, said in a tweet on Thursday that it would be “wise” for the prime minister to “voluntarily submit to a drug test”.

Ms Marin said alcohol was consumed during the evening while she denied taking drugs or witnessing drug use by the participants.

Antti Lindtman, leader of the SDP group in parliament, told a party conference on Thursday that the prime minister had the support of his group.

“I don’t see a big problem with her dancing at a private event with friends,” he said.

As for the drug test, that’s her business, Lindtman added.

Ms. Marin, the youngest head of government in the world when she took office in 2019, has already come under criticism for parties at her official residence.

In December 2021, Marin was criticized for dancing until dawn when she was a contact case for Covid-19.

According to a survey conducted at the time for the broadcaster MTV3, two-thirds of those questioned had rated Ms. Marin’s ceremonial departure as “a serious mistake”.
