FINLAND – The images show every night out with friends, except one of the characters is none other than a world leader. Since Wednesday evening, August 17, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has been seen in an undated video that has continued to circulate on social media and has drawn her criticism.

In the pictures we see the young woman, now 36, the youngest to lead her country in Finnish history, dancing, singing and enjoying herself in the company of several local celebrities. According to Iltalehti newspaper, it allows us to recognize the influencer and photographer Janita Autio, the singer Alma, the radio and TV presenter Tinni Wikström, as well as a well-known stylist, a famous YouTuber or even a member of parliament from the Democratic Party who directs, Ilmari Nurminen.

A video of which it is not known when or where it was filmed, although some media put the date of August 6th. In any case, Sanna Marin was questioned on the subject this Thursday, August 18 morning and regretted that these videos were published, but confirmed that the evening had actually taken place in two private apartments and then in bars in Helsinki. She also claimed that these videos were not part of a strategy to blackmail her and indicated that her security guard was present nearby.

“I have nothing to hide and I have done nothing illegal”

On the fringes of a business trip to Finland, she also dismissed the notion that she might have used drugs during the event. “I don’t know what you mean,” she specifically responded when rumors of a narcotics summoning made the rounds during the video. “I’ve never taken drugs and I didn’t see any other attendee that night taking them,” she affirmed.

When asked again about the issue and specifically whether the police should investigate possible drug use during the evening, she added that she was not aware of any illegal activity. “I don’t have to comment or say if I think the police should investigate. But I have nothing to hide and I haven’t done anything illegal. »

Statements that did not prevent the Führer’s critics from multiplying the criticism. Aleksi Valavuori, media personality and sports presenter, tweeted: “Some would say she’s cool. Maybe for the other teenagers. But what about a responsible leader of a country in crisis? “And to add: ‘She is by far the most incompetent PM we have ever had. Should she take her leather jacket and go. »

To which Sanna Marin replied that she was just living a normal life. “I have a family, a job, and sometimes a bit of free time to take advantage of my friends. (…) And I can confirm it to you: I danced and sang, hugged my friends and drank alcohol. »

Already several controversial publications

Since taking office in December 2019, Sanna Marin has been criticized several times for her behavior. Last December, she had notably had to issue a public apology after being held in a nightclub as a contact case for the Covid, having just left a Council of Ministers where one of the participants was positive. Specifically, she explained that she missed a text message urging her to isolate herself until she tests negative, despite a full vaccination schedule.

At the time, this highly commented outing had earned her an unenvious qualification from an editorial writer at Swedish tabloid Dagens Nyheter, who dubbed Sanna Marin a “celebrity ass-licker” and accused her of not only thinking about showing off alongside celebrities on social media .

The allegations were reinforced by another outing last fall, during which she invited about thirty people to a party after a concert without her protection services being able to verify the identities and backgrounds of those guests.

Elections as Justices of the Peace

In addition, Sanna Marin has been criticized several times in recent weeks for appearing at concerts and festivals, activities which – according to her critics – are not necessarily compatible with being at the forefront of the resistance against Russia, while Finland is is about to join NATO.

Critics, however, are far from unanimous. The Finnish Prime Minister’s young and festive image and political record make her a well-respected leader. In the last popularity poll conducted in Finland, it received 55% positive opinions and can boast of having the five most popular governments of the 21st century in its country.

So, still in Iltalehti’s columns, we can read that Sanna Marin “is the country’s most important political figure, that she is leading Finland in one of the most terrible crises of her time because of Russia’s belligerent desires and she still finds time to have fun” . The headline adds: “Casual, modern and self-confident, that’s how politics works. Sanna Marin embodies the ‘cool’ generation and that’s clearly not Putin. »

A subject on which she spoke again this Thursday after the controversy: “I intend to remain the same person I have always been and I hope that people will agree. We live in a democracy and there are elections to settle this type of debate. »
