Nine people were killed in a shootout in Monterey Park, about ten miles from downtown Los Angeles, amid crowds attending Lunar New Year celebrations. This is what the Associated Press agency writes on its website, citing police sources.

The shooting occurred on West Garvey Avenue at approximately 10:22 p.m. last night, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. Seung Won Choi, owner of a restaurant across the street from where the shooting happened, told the Los Angeles Times that three people burst into his restaurant and told him to lock the door because a man was holding a semi-automatic pistol nearby also had several rounds of ammunition with her. Wong Wei, who lives nearby, also told the same newspaper that a friend of hers went to a nightclub and saw a gunman and three bodies: two women and a person she identified as the club manager. The killer, he added, had a gun and appeared to be firing indiscriminately.
