The Consulate General said in a press release it was dissatisfied and “strongly” opposed to the report.

He said China has never interfered in any way with Canada’s elections or internal affairs and the reports could damage the country’s ties with Canada.

The Globe and Mail report, released on Friday, says documents held by Canada’s security intelligence agency describe Tong Xiaoling, then the Chinese consul-general in Vancouver, who boasted of a strategy that led to the defeat of two Conservative lawmakers in 2021.

Conservatives Kenny Chiu, who ran for Steveston-Richmond East, and Alice Wong, then the central MP for Richmond, both lost their seats in 2021 after suffering a sharp drop in their share of the vote.

The city of Richmond has a large Chinese immigrant population.
