European lottery winner spends BRL 254 million before dying

Scotsman Colin Weir, winner of one of the biggest EuroMillions jackpots, was spending around £40 million (about R$254 million) before his death in 2019. He and his wife Christine earned £161million (circa 2011) in the lottery played in some European countries.

The couple, who divorced in 2018 after 38 years together, maintained a life of luxury with rights to buy cars, racehorses, land and even a 55 per cent stake in Partick Thistle Football Club, a football team for which there was acclaim.

They also started a charity, the Weir Charitable Trust, and shared their wealth with friends and family. Documents show the duo’s spending reached nearly £100,000 a week (about R$624,000).

The Weir residence, a waterfront home in Ayr, Scotland, has been valued at over £1million. Another property called Frognal House near the town of Troon, also in Scotland, was bought for £3.5 million (about R$22 million).

The Scot died at the age of 71 from a serious infection and an acute kidney injury. He was already struggling with some health problems.

At the time of his death he owned around £212,000 worth of jewellery, furniture and artwork. The fortune was passed on to his two sons.
