An elephant killed a 70yearold woman, identified as Maya Murmu, in eastern India. The incident happened on Thursday (September 6), after the tragedy, the animal returned to the funeral to trample the corpse of the elderly woman.
According to the authorities, Maya was trampled to death while fetching water from a well in the Mayurbhanj region, the animal would have appeared out of nowhere. The victim was taken to a hospital but did not survive his injuries.
According to British newspaper Independent, local police reported that the elephant had strayed from the Dalma wildlife sanctuary, nearly 200 kilometers from Mayurbhanj.
According to family accounts, during the final funeral rites, the same elephant appeared, lifted the old woman’s body from the pyre and trampled it again while those in attendance watched in shock. The family could only proceed with the ceremony after the elephant left.
