Quito, January 20th (RHC) Organizations of workers, retirees and pensioners in Ecuador demonstrated this Friday near the Ecuadorian Institute for Social Security (IESS) in their defense and against the referendum conducted by the government of President William Lasso, was initiated.

The President of the Workers’ United Front (FUT), José Villavicencio, reiterated: “This will be the first action of 2023 and if the government does not listen to the workers, the pensioners and the Ecuadorian people, we will continue to fight to fight against privatization.

For his part, the President of the Popular Front, Nelson Erazo, pointed out that “Lasso, together with Augusto de la Torre, has pointed out that the solution to the problems of the IESS is to extend the retirement years. In other words, dumping the crisis on the backs of contributors and pensioners.”

Similarly, the President of the National Union of Educators (UNE), Isabel Vargas, stressed that workers flatly oppose the appointment of Richard Gómez as a member of the workforce.

“The IESS was attacked by the appointment of Richard Gómez, who is illegally and unlawfully a member of the affiliates,” Vargas said.

For his part, FUT national president Mesías Tatamuez specified that “Lasso wants the insurance money and will not have it; This money belongs to the affiliates and goes to education, health and the electricity companies; something that discredits Lasso abroad”.

The mobilization, which began near the IESS headquarters on Avenida 10 de Agosto in the north center of the capital, advanced as far as Chile Street to reach the Carondelet Palace. However, police forces prevented the protesters from passing. (Source: Telesur)
