Economy: Decided to stop combustion engines from 2035

Business

From 2035, no new cars with internal combustion engines can be registered in the EU. This has already been decided by the EU Parliament. The industry hopes that policy makers will not only favor electric cars in the future.

The car of the future could also run on hydrogen or artificially produced fuels. Battery vehicles are one way, according to the president of vehicle trade at the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce, Adolf Seifried: “If there are other technologies that can also cause zero emissions in Europe, then you shouldn’t turn a blind eye to that technology.”

Euro 7 can be expensive for buyers

And the combustion engine remains an issue for now. In two years, a new, stricter emission standard will be introduced – Euro 7. The manufacturers’ association demands that the requirements be relaxed, otherwise new diesel or gasoline cars with complex emission control systems will become more expensive, he says Seifried : “If we introduce Euro 7 from 2025 as planned, most likely we will no longer be able to offer vehicles below 20,000 euros.”

Five million petrol and diesel vehicles in Austria

By the way, it will probably be a long time before combustion engines are no longer on the roads in Austria. More than five million gasoline and diesel vehicles are currently registered.

“Big charging parks outside cities”

According to entrepreneur Gerhard Limberger, who is currently planning an electric charging station in Meggenhofen, charging electric cars will require a completely new network of charging stations: “It will not be possible in all cities and residential complexes for people to charge at home. You will need large charging parks outside cities, which city dwellers drive to once or twice a week to charge their cars.”

Reporting in “Upper Austria Today”

The TV program “Upper Austria Today” analyzed the current state of infrastructure for electric cars in Upper Austria.

EU fixes combustion engines from 2035

The EU stipulates that, from the year 2035, only new cars that do not emit greenhouse gases during operation can be sold in the EU. Cars with internal combustion engines can no longer be purchased. How and whether electric vehicles can make up for this loss is unclear.
